Shinobi No Mono 3: Resurrection (1963)

According to history, Goemon Ishikawa was boiled alive after a failed assassination attempt on Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the man who unified Japan in the late 16th century). The problem is that this fact gets in the way of yet another Shinobi movie and at the end of the second film (the one immediately preceding this one) you see Ishikawa about to be tossed into the pot of boiling oil. The film makers get around this by saying that the man who was boiled was NOT Ishikawa but a double who was willing to pretend to be him. While not exactly believable, this worked well enough and the movie seems to be more a "what if" sort of film.

Throughout most of the movie, Ishikawa and a new sidekick ninja (sort of like his "Robin") do a lot of things to annoy and destabilize the government. However, this never was that satisfying for two reasons. First, their most daring work (the abduction or assassination of Hideyoshi's heir) was a complete failure. Second, when Ishikawa finally succeeds in penetrating Hideyoshi's castle in the film and is about to murder the man, Ishekawa realizes that the guy is about to die anyways of natural causes and he just leaves--muttering something about "killing him would be too kind"! So, he spent the entire movie trying to kill the man and doesn't when he finally gets a chance. And so, while the film is enjoyable and well made, there is not sense of satisfaction when all is said and done. It ends with a fizzle.

Despite these serious problems with the plot, this is probably the second best of the three films. Not bad at all--just anticlimactic.

Shinobi no mono: Zoku Kirigakure Saizô (1964)

In part five of the 8-part Shinobi No Mono Ninja film series the heroic ninja Kirigakure Saizo (Raizo Ichikawa, of Sleepy Eyes of Death fame) serves the daimyo Sanada, played by Lone Wolf and Cub star Tomisaburo Wakiyama. They are assaulted by Ieyasu and his soldiers. They flee to an allied camp, and once there start plotting how to fight back and win the war. They come across a gun merchant with a unique, three-barrel gun, giving the holder incredible fire power. They begin to strategize ways to find out how the merchant selling these firearms has acquired them, hoping that possession of these weapons in their arsenal will lead to ultimate victory. The merchants of Tanegashima are the makers of the gun, and claim they have made it according to a blueprint gained from the only Western traders they are allowed to do business with, the Portuguese. The Sanada partisans know that can't be true because the 3-barrel gun is made of iron too fine for the Portuguese to have access to. They must unravel the secret of the "3-barrel gun". Kirigakure is sent to the Island city of Tanegishima to solve the mystery. Once there he will need all his ninja skills to survive, not only the Tanegishima cartel and their Chinese allies, but enemies from his past, in the form of the daughters of a slain enemy ninja. Can he get the job done and stay alive?

Shinobi no mono: Shin kirigakure Saizô (1966)

On May 8, 1615 the summer campaign of Osaka has reached the climax.

This film takes place immediately following Kirigakure Saizou.

After Yukimura escapes, Ieyasu orders everyone to be killed. He gets a report after the battle that they are unable to find Yukimura`s body. He offers a big reward for the body. Hanzo reports that a small boat escaped from the castle with 3 men in it. Tokugawa Ieyasu deduces that it must have been Kirigakure Saizou and Yukimura and that they will go to Satsuma.

Hanzo orders his ninja to wait until night before attacking the boat. That night as Saizou guides the boat to land through thick fog, he detects that they are being followed by several boats. Saizou enters the water and swims back to see Hanzo`s men following them. He manages to dispatch several of his opponents using shuko (hand claws), but Yukimura`s son Daisuke is struck with shuriken and collapses before Saizou can return to their boat. Pouring oil into the water and lighting it as a distraction, Saizou and Yukimura manage to escape.

At Satsuma, Yukimura explains that the way to win wars from now on is to use guns, but it`s difficult to find high quality firearms like the ones made at Tanegashima (an island in southern Japan renown for its firearms production). He explains that they must determine the secret of the Tanegashima.

A merchant stops by to show off his new gun that will shoot 3 rounds at once.

Lord Shimazu orders Iehisa to send a message to their allies that the revolution is near. They assume that Ieyasu will be appointed asDajo Cabinet Minister and when he is, he will stop by Kyoto to accept the position. That is when they must make their move.

At Sunpu, Tokugawa checks the quality of some Tanegashima products. In an audience with Ieyasu, Iehisa is told that they know that someone named Minami Hirayuki (Yukimura) is staying at their castle.

Iehisa is not sure who told him about that since there were only 3 people around when they discussed the plans for rebellion.

Saizou intercepts a messenger who is carrying a message that reads `Iehisa is in secret discussions with Yoshihiro.` Saizou also eavesdrops on the conversation between a young girl and one of the messengers who used to be her gardener. The man gives her a bird that he shot near the border and she returns to a kenjutsu dojo where she presents the bird to her father who is the instructor. He asks her if he shot it near the border and she verifies this. Isaikan is the kenjutsu instructor for the Shimazu clan.

Saizou watches as the priest who served tea while the discussion took place plants a note in the garden. Both the priest and Isaikan are brought before the Shimazu. He orders them to be executed as traitors. The Shimazu thank Saizou for rooting out the spies. They make the decision that a new plan must be drawn up since the old one has been compromised. They also decide that Yukimura should hide at a hot springs area called Ibusuki.

Saizou stops the daughter of Isaikan from committing suicide by explaining that her father kept his actions a secret because he didn`t want her to get involved. He tells her that she must live in order to find happiness. At that point, troops come to take her away but Saizou helps her escape by using metsubushi (blinding powder). During their escape, she stabs herself.

In Tanegashima, Saizou is followed by a couple of samurai. He manages to evade them in an inn where he is approached by a woman named Akemi who asks where he is going. He replies that he is going to Satsuma to make some money. He then breaks up a little scuffle as Manazuru is grabbed by a Chinese ruffian. The Chinese man uses his whip to attack Saizou, but the strike is easily evaded and the Chinese take off. The two women thank the ninja for his help and he tells them his name is Teruzo. Akemi follows after him as he leaves and says that someday she would like to return to Satsuma.

Kirigakure sneaks through the tight defenses of the gun factory and observes the manufacturing process of the Tanegashima weapons. He creates a distraction and escapes safely from the area to send a message by bird to Yukimura. The message reads `I snuck into the gun factory today. It has security as tight as that of a fortress. The blast furnace is especially well protected. I believe that`s clear evidence of secret use of the blast furnace. Besides, the Chinaman named Ryuhi needs to be investigated.`

Back at the inn, Ryuhi and his men all get up to go in another room as Saizou enters the inn. A man speaks with the Chinese pointing out that the suspicious Saizou might be a spy for the Shimazu. Meanwhile, Kirigakure gives Akemi some money for her and her sister to return to Shimazu. She asks him to come with her and when he refuses, she says she will stay until he is ready to leave. He tells her to just go and find some happiness.

The two women receive a visit from an old man who reminds them that they are kunoichi (female ninja) and that a man called Saizou killed their father, Yotoji, at the battle of Osaka castle. When they learn of the name he is using and realize it`s the same man they are shocked. The old man tells them they must use their feminine wiles to kill the enemy ninja using poisonous snake venom.

Yukimura reads another message from Saizou stating that there is no doubt that the Tanegashima are trading with China. Shimazu reports that they have gained considerable support in their war against Ieyasu.

Ieyasu orders the priest Konchin-Suden to Satsuma to convince the various daimyo not to join the rebellion and to convince the Shimazu to give up Hirayuki.

Manazuru slips some poison into sake that she brings to `Teruzo`. He drinks it and falls to the floor just as Akemi enters the room. Akemi slaps her sister and asks what she has done. Manazaru says she has avenged her father. Suddenly, Saizou spits out the poison and stands up before the two women! Manazaru attacks him with her dagger, but Saizou throws her onto the table. She cuts her neck on the dishes and some of the poison drips into her wound. She dies and Akemi reveals her identity to Saizou and tells him that someday he will die just like her father did. After Saizou leaves, the old man returns to tell Akemi that she must kill Saizou.

The Tanegashima gun makers meet with Ryuhi. They complain about the price of Chinese iron going up. Ryuhi threatens to cut off the supplies of iron if the price is not paid. The Tanegashima merchants agree to the price and begin to sign the new contract. Saizou, hidden in the rafters, blows sleeping gas down into the room. After all 3 men are asleep, he takes the contract and escapes into the night. He is spotted but manages to evade the multitude of flaming shuriken thrown at him. He counterattacks and Akemi tosses an explosive. Still, Saizou manages to escape.

Akemi later admits that she betrayed the old man and let Kirigakure escape. She is stabbed and thrown off a cliff by the old man`s men. As he looks out at the water, the old man removes his beard and long hair to reveal Hattori Hanzo!!

The priest tries to convince the Shimazu clan to hand over Hiruyiki. Lord Shimazu agrees and the priest promises that the clan will not be punished if they hand him over quietly. As the priest leaves, Iehisa is outraged that his father has agreed to turn Yukimura over to the Tokugawa.

As Saizou returns to Shimazu, he sees Ieyasu`s priest. He questions Yukimura about it and confirms that Tanegashima are secretly trading with China. He shows the daimyo the contracts he stole and points out that with this evidence, the Tanegashima guns will fall into the hands of the Shimazu.Yukimura explains that the struggle against Ieyasu is over because Shimazu agreed to hand him over the next day. Saizou begs his lord to fight back and when he refuses, the ninja declares that he will kill Ieyasu himself.

The next day Yukimura turns himself over to Ieyasu`s men. As they transport him in a palanquin through a mountain pass, rocks fall from the mountainside and shuriken fly through the air as Saizou takes on the whole group. In order to stop the continuing bloodshed, Yukimura takes one of the shuriken and cuts his own throat with it. Even after the ninja discovers his lord has taken his own life, he announces that he will still kill Ieyasu.

Ieyasu admonishes Hanzo for letting Kirigakure make a fool of him and tells the ninja not to show his face anymore. In order to save face, Hanzo orders his men to kill Saizou no matter what and places them strategically throughout the castle.

In a really cool series of scenes, Saizou slips stealthily into the castle and past the defenses Hanzo has prepared. Looking through a tiny hole he has drilled into the ceiling above Ieyasu`s bedroom, Saizou prepares a poison dart to kill the daimyo. The dart strikes Ieyasu in the neck but is knocked free. Some of the poison takes effect and Saizou watches for several days from above the lord`s sickbed as he lingers in and out of consciousness. Ieyasu one day gives his orders for what should take place after his death and he receives the news that he has been appointed dajo daijin (supreme Cabinet Master). Sometime later, when Ieyasu is alone, Saizou reveals himself to the dying lord. After a short conversation, the daimyo dies and Saizou excitedly leaves the castle repeating to himself that he finally did it and that Yukimura can rest in peace.

One april 17, 1616 Tokugawa Ieyasu died. The news has spread all across the nation, but there is no disturbance at all.

Shinsho: shinobi no mono (1966)

Towards the end of the Tenmon Era, Shogun Ashikaga`s powers were weakening by the day and many were there who planned to overthrow him. It was the beginning of the Sengoku (Warring States) period.

As the movie begins, Kasumi Kanbei is testing his gunpowder in a small house when he senses men approaching. He hides his son Kojiro and the gunpowder. As the men enter, he kills two and fights the rest. One of the attackers cuts off Kanbei`s arm with a kusarigama (sickle and chain weapon). Another man kills Kanbei as two others try to steal the gunpowder. The boy and the attackers barely escape before the remaining powder explodes.

Twenty years later, Takeda Shingen and Tokugawa Ieyasu battle for control of Japan.

Kojiro, now older, observes as a riding samurai is shot by a ninja. He tries to find the man, but is tricked and the other ninja escapes. Kojiro`s master comes by and says that the man must have been a ninja from Kai because they never fail to get Nobunaga`s messengers. He tells Kojiro to seek out Kurato Sadayu in Kai to further his skills.

In Kai, Kojiro sees a man sharpening a kama that looks like the one his father was wounded by. A woman comes by to pick up the kama and he follows her to the red light district. Kojiro sleeps with Chitose and she gets up during the night to hand the kama to someone waiting outside. When she returns to bed, Kojiro holds a knife to her throat and asks if the man was Yafuse no Ijyuu – one of the men who killed his father. Chitose neither confirms nor denies the identity of the man before several men enter the room. Kojiro makes his escape and Chitose yells after him that Ijyuu is headed to Anegawa.

Kojiro meets up with Ijyuu and they fight. Kojiro is wounded, but manages to cut off his enemy`s arm and finds a note on his weapon before losing consciousness from his injury.

Waking to find his wound wrapped and that he`s been moved to safety, Kojiro explains to the man who saved him that he was planning to give the note to Kurato so that he could join his ninja group. The man says that he`s Kurato.

Kurato Sadayu, who works for Shingen, agrees to train Kojiro. During his training, the young ninja meets Akane and learns from one of his compatriots that she`s dangerous.

After explaining to his men that they fight for Shingen because he seems to understand the ninja, Kurato speaks with Kojiro alone. He orders Kojiro to attack him. When he does, the master ninja disappears. After a bit, he explains this amazing technique to Kojiro and leaves him alone to practice.

We learn that Akane is Kurato`s daughter. The girl asks her father about his new student. He explains that he wants Kojiro to become strong. Later, Akane brings some rice gruel and lion`s meat to Kojiro as he`s still practicing. Kojiro learns that Akane is really the daughter of an Iga ninja who Kurato killed and is surprised by her not wanting to take revenge. The girl explains that she`s seen enough violence. When she asks about Kojiro`s childhood toy that he still carries with him, he refuses to answer.

Kojiro practices his ninja skills and he seems to be getting better. Kojiro later asks Akane why he was told that she`s dangerous and she explains that her father has killed the two men who`ve been interested in her because they were ninja. Kojiro says that he`s becoming close to her.

Shingen attacks Ieyasu`s forces and Kurato tests Kojiro`s skills. The young ninja has improved and the master agrees to take him along to fight the enemy`s forces. He also explains that whoever killed his father will probably be with Ieyasu`s forces. As he`s preparing to leave for battle, Akane gives Kojiro a lock of her hair so that she`ll always be with him and Kojiro gives her his stuffed animal toy.

At Hamamatsu castle, Ieyasu and his generals discuss the strategy for the upcoming battle. Since they have a small army, they need to rely on Nobunaga`s army to help out and arrive in time.

Kurato and Kojiro intercept a message from Nobunaga to Ieyasu. Shingen is pleased to learn that Ieyasu must rely on Nobunaga`s troops and he orders Kurato and his men to Futamata castle where the next battle will take place.

Kojiro infiltrates the castle and discovers and underground passage that contains guns and ammo and leads to a secret escape route. Kurato explains his plans to empty Futamata castle`s only well and cut off the escape route by digging from the passage to the well and filling in the tunnel behind them. The plan is successful and Shingen thanks Kurato and his men prior to ordering the assault on the castle to begin.

Although they have very little water, Ieyasu`s men fight on, hoping that Nobunaga`s army will arrive soon.

Shingen`s spies tell him that Nobunaga`s army will arrive within 5 days so he orders the ninja to completely empty the well even though the tunnel is in danger of collapsing. Shingen has his men bombard the castle, which traps and kills several of Kurato`s ninja. Kurato and his remaining men vow revenge against Shingen.

Shingen uses his momentum to move towards Hamamatsu, but he stops at Matagahara in order to lure Ieyasu`s forces out of the Hamamatsu castle. Ieyasu takes the bait and determines that he must move against Shingen`s forces. He takes a walk to think about his strategy. Kojiro appears and reveals Shingen`s plans. From hiding, Kojiro sees Ieyasu speak with Madara.

Ieyasu`s army is easily defeated after they leave the castle. The remaining samurai retreat to Hamamatsu castle.

Ijyuu seeks out Madara to ask him to take him in because of his lost arm. Madara refuses and leaves the wounded man in disgrace. Chitose comes to find Ijyuu, but he stabs himself, but manages to her that she should tell Kojiro that the second killer was Madara and that the third killer has a scar on his left hand before he dies.

Kojiro fights Madara, but they both escape.

As Shingen reviews his troops before the assault on Hamamatsu castle, he walks out into the open to listen to someone playing the flute. Kurato shoots and wounds the daimyo. As the wounded warlord is taken away, he tells his commanders not to let his troops know he`s been hurt.

Madara reports to Ieyasu that Shingen`s army has moved. Ieyasu celebrates and orders Madara find out what happened.

Madara finds Kojiro`s hideout and blows sleeping gas into the hut. As he raises his sword to kill the young ninja, Chitose leaps under the blade, saving his life. Kojiro escapes and he fights Madara in the river. Kojiro throws two shuriken into Madara`s eyes but refuses to kill him, asking instead who the third killer was. The blinded ninja stabs himself. The dying Chitose tells Kojiro that Ijyuu says the third killer has a scar on his left hand. As Kurato appears, he kneels to finish off the dying Madara. As he does, Kojiro has a flashback to the third killer finishing off his father. He does not see any scar on the ninja master`s hand, so he offers to go with Kurato to Harai-ji temple to see if Shingen is really dead.

Kurato and Kojiro sneak into the temple and shoot Shingen with a poison blowdart from above the ceiling. As the warlord dies, Kojiro sees that his master has a scar on his left leg and realizes that Chitose was wrong about the location of the scar.

As the two ninja make their escape, Kurato tells the young ninja that he has prepared him for this day and orders Kojiro to kill him. They fight and Kojiro stabs his master. Kurato tells him that after this he should quit being a ninja and take care of Akane. The old man leaps from the roof and is killed by Shingen`s samurai, giving Kojiro a chance to get away.

As the film ends, Kojiro returns to Akane.

Bakumatsu zankoku monogatari (1964)

This is one of the bloodiest black and white films from the mid-sixties. This film tell the brutal story of a young recruit to the Shinsengumi, the para-military force of ronin led by Kondo Isami, and made famous to the west in Sword of Doom. This is another view of that group without the usual whitewashing of their character. The full translation of the title tells it all. A Cruel Story set during the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It's a powerful indictment of the brutality going on in Japan at the time in the name of keeping the West out of the country. Finally re-mastered from a new superior anamorphic widescreen print with improved subtitles and theatrical trailer, it is a superb motion picture that is not to be missed.
